Flea Bites No More

Dan Chavez
06/10/2002

Opposition to the mainstream media has been far less successful than it might due to one reason and one reason alone, namely, lack of unity and co-ordination among otherwise disparate groups who should be acting together for a common good. Many different organizations have attempted boycotts, letter-writing campaigns and even demonstrations against the media but they have failed; for all the lasting good they have accomplished they might as well have been fleabites to an elephant. The media can and does laugh at its opponents because we do not speak with a unified voice, all of us, at the same time. If there was a way to accomplish this, and I believe there is, the liberal media would very shortly be swept into the dustbin of history and it's employees would be seeking a different line of work.

CCRM as the 'Man of LaMancha' leads the people in the fight against media biasLets say, for the sake of argument, that every organization which considered the liberal media to be its primary opponent decided to act in concert with one another in a unified way, say, for example, with a boycott. What would happen next? The response of the media now to its critics is to loftily ignore them. You can just bet that were an attack large enough the media would use a divide-and-conquer tactic, vilifying and condemning each separate component of such a coalition in turn, in an effort to divide us against one another and go back to sucking our lollipops each in our separate corners. If we clearly identify our target right at the beginning and not let our differences in other areas overshadow our common goal, we will truly be indivisible and guaranteed of success.

Always remember: the liberal media is the most powerful component of the liberal Democratic coalition. Its choice of targets and who to demonize and castigate have never been those on the left. Faced with such unity of expression it behooves us to manifest at least an equal if not superior unity among ourselves if we expect to triumph. And what will this triumph consist of? How about loss of revenue to certain media venues, or sale of such venues by corporate owners due to lack of profit or revocation of some FCC licenses to operate? These might be a few positive indicators that we trust our efforts shall lead to.

Imagine then, various organizations acting in a concerted way against the liberal media, able to set aside their differences in pursuit of this common goal and sufficiently unified on this so as to be immune to the divide-and-conquer smear tactics, which they will undoubtedly use against us. What is the one thing we require? Certainly not numbers or dedication to the justness of our cause as we have both in abundance. No, what we need is inter-organizational unity of purpose so that each organization can summon its members to participation in this shared task.

Historically, the success of a cause or movement has depended upon the unity of those involved. Without unity against the liberal media we will not succeed. They see us as rabble, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sixpack of flyover country. Currently, they feel no cause to be concerned about losing their power due to the efforts of folks like us. I trust we can give them a cause for concern.
