11/19/2001 "It is really interesting looking at a piece of wire copy this morning that five other Airbuses have crashed since 1988. And the last one was an Iran airplane that was mistakenly shot down by a U.S. Navy plane. And this morning when we were asking the Iranian President about U.S.-Iranian relations and terrorism, he said 'you define terrorism in one way, but when someone shoots down one of our commercial aircraft that's terrorism for Iranians as well.' Just to show you how many connections are made on a day like this." Peter Jennings had been over at the UN interviewing Iranian President Moammar Khatami at the time of Monday's plane crash. He managed to get out of the UN before it was locked down and back to his ABC News anchor desk in time to stick his foot in his mouth. The Iran Air incident he spoke of was the first of five airbus crashes, not the last. It was shot down by a missile fired from a U.S. Navy ship, not a Navy plane, as Jennings reported. On July 3, 1988, near the Straits of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, the U.S.S. Vincennes fired on an Iranair flight that they were unable to identify. All 274 passengers and 16 crew aboard the plane were killed. Tragic as this incident was, it had nothing to do with Monday's crash. It was simply an excuse for Jennings to bring up a sad and embarrassing event. And unlike the gloating and truth-twisting we have become accustomed to from terrorist states, the U.S. gave the Iranians the truth and a sincere apology. Of course the Iranian president wants to call it "terrorism"! Iran's own terrorism has placed that country in hot water from which they are still trying to extricate themselves. No excuse for Jennings to try to equate this event with the crash of American Airlines Flt. 587 or with September 11. I guess it doesn't matter what you say so long as you can keep babbling during a Special Report! Let's inform Peter Jennings of our thoughts.
