07/02/2001 Yet this leads to our real Media Bias Outrage of the Week: On June 29, 2001, The Chicago Tribune published a hit piece against ABC correspondent John Stossel written by TV/media critic Steve Johnson. In an article titled, "Stossel's Latest Stunt Puts Him at the Back of the Classy," Mr. Johnson indulged in vituperative character assassination that should have had no place in a major daily newspaper. The article was a sorry attempt to undermine Stossel’s credibility prior to the airing of his report, "Tampering With Nature" on ABC that same night. Johnson cited one mistake made in a Stossel report aired many months ago to try to persuade the reader that Stossel cannot be trusted. In the article, Johnson also makes a number of ridiculously crude and mean-spirited personal comments about Stossel: "He's got dark hair and what can be described accurately…as a porn-star mustache." "..he speaks in a querulous tone, using pointedly plain language, as if his audience were primarily made up of school children…" [Editor's note: Who does that remind you of?] "A lot of his ideas are, of course, nuts…" In the article, Johnson makes a number of gratuitous assertions that attempt to persuade the reader that Stossel is promoting some kind of corporate-friendly agenda. However, he cites not a shred of evidence that proves that any information presented in the program is inaccurate. For the full Johnson article, go to Stossel's Latest Stunt Puts Him At The Back of The Classy . I would like to ask The Chicago Tribune a few questions:
This is just one more example of the type of bias that is causing people to lose faith in the media.
