A Conservative Democrat

07/09/2001
"When is a Democratic Congressman labeled "right-wing"? When a network reporter is doing a story on a Congressman linked to a victim of probable crime." --Brent Baker in 07/05/2001 CyberAlert.

Most news stories have been careful not to make a big deal of the party affiliation of Rep. Gary Condit, D-CA, linked to missing D.C. intern Chandra Levy since the story came out in early May. Yet now, NBC News has decided to make it clear that he is a "right-wing Democrat".

In a story aired on Today (07/02/2001), reporter George Lewis stated: "Modesto, California, in the middle of the state's central valley. A major agricultural area with lots of farms and cattle. A politically conservative place where the average home goes for around $190,000. They call it 'Condit Country' around here and six-term Congressman Gary Condit, a 53-year-old right-wing Democrat, has won re-election by huge margins." Hmmmmm . . .

We have become accustomed to hearing the term "right-wing" used by certain news personalities to signify bad or dangerous as in the terrifying phrase "right-wing agenda" or the spine-chilling "vast right-wing conspiracy". Are we being told that Rep. Gary Condit is dangerous as well?

Now have a look at the story on MSNBC.com. Scroll to the bottom of the page to the box of "who's who" in relation to the Chandra Levy disappearance case. Click on "Gary Condit". We are informed immediately that Rep. Condit is a "conservative Democrat".How interesting!

I have a few questions for NBC News and MSNBC.com:

  • How exactly do you define a "conservative democrat"?
  • Which is more dangerous: a right-wing democrat or a moderate republican?
  • Aren't you, in fact, trying to help the Democratic National Committee deal with their public relations problems for the coming congressional elections?

Let NBC and MSNBC.com know how you feel about their laundering of Rep. Condit at the Republican laundromat. Here is the contact information:
