. . . And Is Just Too Cheerful About It! 09/10/2001 On Friday, 09/07/2001, while breaking the story on MSNBC that Rep. Gary Condit, D-CA, will not seek re-election, Andrea Mitchell sounded pleased as punch when she announced, "The good news for the Democrats is that most Americans are not even aware that he is a Democrat." (Ed. note: Condit's staff denies at the time of this writing that he has made a decision. See links below.) And why is that? Mitchell went on to imply that this was due to Condit's congressional voting record. As if voters outside of his district would have any reason to notice! The real reason few are aware of his party affiliation is that it has rarely been reported! A Media Research Center study found that out of 179 news stories (ABC, CBS, NBC, mornings, evenings and weekends, May 14 through July 11) only 14 stories identified Condit as a Democrat. A mere 8 percent! And now the pay off, the good news: Most Americans are not aware that Condit is a Democrat! Isn't that just great! Good news if you're a Democrat, anyway. Some might argue that his party has nothing to do with the facts of the story. Yet when Senator Packwood was widely pilloried in the media due to his troubles in relating appropriately to women, it seemed very important to identify him has a Republican every time the story was introduced. Furthermore, if his party affiliation was so unimportant, then it wouldn't be news that the Democrats had dodged a bullet! If most Americans don't know Condit is a Democrat, it is yet another example of the liberal media's double standard. I have a few questions for Andrea Mitchell:
Let's put Ms. Mitchell on notice that we are disgusted by her obvious delight in media trickery.
