ABC Wants You To
Feel Sorry For These People

03/04/2002
Demonstrating their spectacular failure to understand the concerns of the American people, ABC News ran a story on Wednesday, 02/27/2002, about FBI "mistreatment" of a Pakistani couple living in New Jersey. They were living there without the proper visas, but ABC apparently saw that as beside the point. Peter Jennings introduction to the story:

"The Justice Department told us again today that since September 11th the U.S. has detained more than 700 non-U.S. citizens, and 327 of these people are still in custody without charges as far as we know, and the government will not reveal who they are or where they are. Tonight the story of one family that has been deeply affected."

Reporter Pierre Thomas presented the story of Anser Mehmood and his wife Asman Naheed. Mehmood was arrested by the FBI on October 3rd.

"The couple was in the U.S. illegally, and the FBI suspected Mamud had ties to the 9-11 hijackers. According to an FBI affidavit, Mehmood, who had a license to haul hazardous materials, refused to carry two shipments on September 11th to Washington, D.C. But the family still has not been told if Mehmood is charged with any crime."
"Naheed said she did not hear one word about her husband for 23 days and had to hire an attorney to find him. With no source of income, she sold her furniture - beds, tables, even her refrigerator. . . .
"The Justice Department says it can't afford to take any chances. Asman Naheed has no idea what will happen to her husband. Today she and the children go back to Pakistan."

Without question, the sudden urgency as of September 11 to find and disrupt terrorist cells has delayed the timely handling of individual cases. Mr. Mehmood "has not been charged with any criminal offenses, although he is being held pending further investigation. He does, however, have an immigration violation for overstaying his visa and working in the United States without proper documentation, authorities say."

Sad, indeed. And all the fault of the FBI and the Justice Department! Only a bunch of nitpicky Nazis would expect a family of immigrants to obtain the proper visas.

Frankly speaking, we do hope that Mr. Mehmood is soon reunited with his family - in Pakistan. Perhaps if he had inconvenienced himself to keep his paperwork current, he and his family would have been spared the inconvenience of being deported. Who's fault is it, anyway, that he staked his family's future on an expired visa?

Sadder still, ABC News has already forgotten the pain and shock of the September 11 terrorist attacks. They attempt to serve up as victims individuals who are in the U.S. illegally and displayed unusual behavior at the time of the attacks. And worse, ABC News does not acknowledge that if individuals who fit the "profile" are not questioned and investigated, U.S. citizens will surely suffer further harm.

This story represents a blatant attempt on the part of ABC News, not to bring us the news, but to re-educate us along their leftist line of thinking.

Let's write to ABC News and inform them that we support the work of the FBI and others to root out terrorist cells and prevent future attacks. Let's inform them that we don't feel sorry for people who get caught flaunting our immigration laws. Let's tell ABC News that the people we really feel sorry for the actual victims of terrorism - and these ain't them! Here is the contact information:
