06/10/2002 Prior to the speech, during the CBS Evening News, 06/06/2002, Rather charged: "President Bush moved to take the spotlight away from the hearing and capture the headlines by suddenly asking for national television time tonight."
Correspondent John Roberts was on the same frequency: "Well, Dan, obviously you can't put together something like this in the space of a couple of days. It's at least weeks in the works, if not longer. But certainly, as you said, the timing is interesting." The question of timing is a fair one - but not the only one! If this is all about distracting concerned citizens, then at least show us your grassy knoll sketches to back up your theory! MSNBC, CNN and NBC brought up the timing issue, but first discussed the meat of the proposal and how Congress and the current bureaucracies will deal with steps toward change. ABC managed to cover the speech without considering the timing. Interestingly, MSNBC's Tim Russert liked the timing: "This has been in the works a long time, make no mistake about it, but the timing was exquisite, if you would." Rather's prime interest in reporting this story was demonstrating possible self-serving motives on the part of the president. He fails to recognize that the public is overloaded with information about how intelligence and law enforcement have failed to protect us. We are ready to hear about positive action toward improvement. If President Bush is ready to knock a few heads together to get that done - GREAT! Join me in letting Dan Rather know we are uninterested in his conspiracy theories.
