Corporate Aggrandizement 09/16/2002 And then you have NBC. NBC thought the September 11 memorials would be the perfect occasion to promote (repeatedly) the upcoming season premiere of "The West Wing". What perfect timing! We are shown a softly-lit ballroom scene. Pseudo-president Bartlet (actor and liberal activist Martin Sheen) delivers words of courage and hope: "More than any time in recent history America's destiny is not of our own choosing. We did not expect, not did we invite, confrontation with evil. But every time we think we've measured our capacity to meet a challenge we look up and we're reminded that that capacity may well be limitless. We will do what is hard, we will achieve what is great. This is the time for American heroes and we reach for the stars." As he speaks, the camera shows us the worshipful faces of his staff members. During the final sentence of his speech, an onscreen graphic shares these words of comfort: "Season premier What are they trying to do? Are they hoping to increase their share with viewers who have lost touch with reality and believe (or wish) that the imaginary government of liberal dreams is real. The arrogance and hypocrisy are unbelievable! Remember the uproar from the liberals when the RNC offered to donors a photograph of President Bush taken aboard Air Force One while talking on the phone to Vice-president Cheney? How inappropriate, they complained, to raise campaign money on the backs of the 9/11 victims! As the Media Research Center's CyberAlert observed: "So much for not using the deaths caused by the terrorist attacks for corporate aggrandizement."But perhaps it really IS okay to use a day of mourning and healing as an occasion to promote your TV show IF you are carrying out the important task of indoctrinating the masses with left wing propaganda. Yes, I think that would make all the difference!
