He Agrees With Me 12/09/2002 On CNN's Inside Politics on 12/02/2002, Bill Schneider held forth on Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry's qualifications: "A presidential candidate needs a grabber issue, something that makes this candidate different from the others, and the right person for the times. John Kerry's grabber issue is national security…Kerry was a decorated combat veteran, and an anti-war activist…What about Kerry's vote against the Gulf War in 1991? That won't hurt him with Democrats…And he's been tough on Iraq in the nearly 12 years since… "One other Kerry strength - intelligence. Remember the seven debates between Kerry and Governor Bill Weld in the 1996 Massachusetts Senate campaign? Kerry showed himself to be deeply knowledgeable on the issues, a quality for which Bush is not well known." Hmmmm…Strong on national security and tough on Iraq - in an anti-war sort of way. Good thing he's smart! But then again, maybe not. Remember the little pop quiz that President Bush failed in November of 1999? A Boston TV reporter, Andy Hiller, asked him to name the leaders of four countries - Taiwan, Chechnya, Pakistan and India. He only got one out of four correct. The media gleefully reported for weeks about how Bush was ill-prepared to deal with foreign policy and just a dim bulb in general. Come to find out, back in 1984, the very same reporter asked the seven Massachusetts candidates for the U.S. Senate four similar questions. What was smart guy John Kerry's score? ZERO!!! So maybe off-the-cuff pop quizzes are really no indicator of actual intelligence, yet this little appraisal does raise certain questions of fairness. Maybe John Kerry got smarter since being elected to the Senate. Maybe Bill Schneider is presenting his opinion as fact. Maybe he's just not smart enough to know he could have called John Kerry an intellectual and left out the swipe at President Bush. Please join me in reminding Bill Schneider that we don't view our president as 'stupid' and we don't view an anti-war liberal as strong on national security. Below is the contact information.
