"An informed citizenry is
essential to the function
of a free society."

The primary function of journalism in a free society is to provide citizens with accurate and reliable information they need to make informed decisions. Technological advances continue to increase the power of the media to effect cultural change, manipulate public opinion and influence government policy. Increasingly, the press has assumed the role of player rather than observer, manipulating their presentation of the news to promote specific political and cultural agendas.

It is our mission to hold the media accountable to their own ethical standard, “journalism’s first obligation is to the truth”.

Our goals are to:

  1. Ensure that both broadcast and print media present the news accurately and fairly
  2. That they not present opinion or “spin” as fact, and
  3. That news of importance and relevance is neither omitted nor slanted toward any political persuasion.

To this end we will closely follow the critical issues of the day, monitor the performance of the media and, through grassroots activism, use our powers of purchase and persuasion to:

  1. Expose media bias and fraud;
  2. Bring pressure to bear for media reform;
  3. When faced with cases of continued bias, inaccuracy or unfairness, direct others toward more reliable new sources.

When you feel your personal media bias tolerance gauge rising into the red zone, don't throw stuff at the TV screen! Send your suggestion to outrage@fairpress.org! Each week, one hideous example of media bias will be selected for closer examination. Hmmmmmm . . .
